How might we design AI to trigger new thought and augment human capacity?

Currently, incentives that drive BigAI are not aligned with incentives that drive human flourishing. We need to create guardrails that allow for human cognition to take precedence over continued usage of AI technology.

I explore how we might introduce alternative communication channels between humans and chatbots in a quick design sprint. Let’s explore mental models, sketching, and readiness indexes!

Studies show that AGI chatbots are making us lonelier, more isolated, as well as less opinionated*. We’re turning to AI for things we historically ask our family and friends. We’re asking it to solve for not only our work dilemmas, but our relationships, mental and physical health, and educational decisions.

Even more relevant, for kids and young adults: we are triggering over-reliance, lack of individualized thought, and a synthetic feeling of collective intelligence increasing while unique identity fades away.

Alternative interfaces

We need to find novel ways for human-AI interaction that avoid over-reliance of the human on the machine. Currently, all interfaces are designed for easy, continuous asking. I introduce features that allow humans to be more conscious of what actually goes on when they ask ChatGPT a question.

To begin ideation, we can keep it plain and simple. One question, endless possibilities.
But, what if we acted like the blank canvas was actually that: A blank canvas.

We allow our imagination to run wild, and use anything and everything as input.
For it to be able to understand our scribbles, it needs to understand our mental models.
It guides us through exercises to understand how we learn, what is important to us, and what our goals are.
Instead of readily answering every question, it waits to understand us and the task first.
Then, for the fun part!
Instead of giving you an answer, the AI finds a way to educate you on the topic.
The hero here: the readiness indicator!
It tells you exactly how much you know about a topic, ensuring that you are ingesting information inclusive of all perspectives on a topic. Then, you are free to make your opinion - but only after you have ensured its an informed one.
Bonus: a creator space where the AI interprets your brainstorming realtime and acts as co-collaborator. Think Miro, but cooler. Enjoy!
